    Apresentação

Paulo Mazzafera graduated in Agronomy from the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture at the University of São Paulo in 1982. He obtained his Master's and Doctorate in Plant Physiology from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), where he is a Full Professor at the Institute of Biology. He completed postdoctoral research at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (1992-1993) and at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Australia (1998-1999). Throughout his career, he has conducted research in various areas of plant physiology, including secondary metabolism, plant productivity, metal toxicity, and lignin biosynthesis in crops such as sugarcane, eucalyptus, and coffee. At Unicamp, he has served as Head of the Department of Plant Biology, Assistant Dean, and Director of the Institute of Biology. He has also coordinated numerous commissions and committees, primarily related to research, and has held the position of Director of the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory. Mazzafera is a 1A level Researcher with the Brazilian Council of Science (CNPq), a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the São Paulo Academy of Science, and The World Academy of Sciences. In 2024 he was awarded the coffee merit medal by the PróCafé Foundation, in recognition of his research on coffee. Between 2017 and 2022, he was a Visiting Professor at the College of Agriculture Luiz de Queiroz, where he initiated work on the response of plants to biostimulant formulations and their mechanisms of action. He retired in March 2023 and continues at Unicamp as a Senior Researcher. In 2023, he joined Buzz Fly, a Brazilian company specializing in producing protein from the black soldier fly, where he is responsible for the Plant Nutrition Division and works on the production of derived products for use in agriculture. His name is among the top 2 percent of scientists according to the rankings established by Stanford University and Elsevier.

    Atividades de pesquisa

Paulo Mazzafera graduated in Agronomy (1982) and obtained his Ph.D. at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp, Brazil), where he holds a Full Professorship position in Plant Physiology. Crop productivity and secondary metabolism are the focus of his research, mainly on coffee, sugarcane, and eucalyptus. He also investigates the responses of plants to low P and how plants positively respond to biostimulant molecules, with a particular interest in root growth and P acquisition. Mazzafera has published over 200 papers and has been the editor of several journals. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Science of São Paulo Academy of Sciences.
