B.Sc. in Biology (Ecology Major) from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1975), M.Sc. in Ecology (1980) and PhD in Ecology from UNICAMP, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1988). Full Professor of Ecology at Unicamp (retired 2016), currently Senior Research Associate. Senior reearcher of the National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) in Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity Conservation (EECbio, 2015-2014). Fellow of the Wissenschafts-Kolleg zu Berlin, 2018-2019, with Fellowship from EURIAS (European Network of Institutes of Advanced Studies). Resident fellow, Bellagio Center, Rockefeller Foundation, 2014. Research focuses on Community Ecology, biodiversity, and conservation policies, with both theoretical and comparative or experimental field studies on plant-insect interactions. Present and past consultant for many Brazilian and overseas funding agencies and organisms, including CNPq, Fapesp, European Science Foundation, UNEP and GEF/World Bank. Ad-hoc reviewer for more than 20 journals, including Science and Nature. Past president of the Brazilian Association for Ecological Science and Conservation (ABECO), 2008-2013. President of the 2nd Meeting of the Brazilian Association of Ecology, 2018. CNPq Research Fellow since 1994, currently (2021-2026) Senior Research Fellow.
