Personal presentation

Prof. Dr. Wagner José Fávaro is a Professor of Human Anatomy at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, where he has built a distinguished academic career, having earned his MSc, PhD, Postdoctoral degree, and, in 2022, the title of Habilitated Professor (Livre-Docente) in Urogenital System Anatomy. He is a leading researcher with recognized expertise in Uropathology, Urogenital Carcinogenesis, Nanomedicine, Immuno-Oncology, and Translational Drug Development, with scientific contributions of national and international impact. He is an active member of major international scientific societies, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the Society for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer (SITC). At the national level, he is a Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Nanomedicine. He also served as a member of the CAPES Quadrennial Evaluation Committee (20172020) in the field of Medicine III, contributing to the assessment and strategic development of graduate programs and biomedical research in Brazil. In the field of scientific innovation and entrepreneurship, Prof. Fávaro is a Co-Founder of NANOIMMUNOTHERAPY PHARMA LTDA and AETER BIOTECH LTDA, technology-based companies dedicated to the development of pharmaceutical products for human and veterinary applications, strengthening the interface between academic research, intellectual property, and technological innovation. At UNICAMP, he leads the CNPq-registered research group Nanomedicine Applied to Immuno-Oncology and Inflammatory Diseases and coordinates the Center for Immunotherapy and Inflammatory Diseases (CIDI), structured upon original scientific discoveries in immunotherapy. Among his most significant scientific achievements is the development of OncoTherad (MRB-CFI-1), recognized as the first 100 Brazilian immunotherapy developed within a public university. Resulting from more than 16 years of research in urogenital carcinogenesis and nanotechnology, OncoTherad demonstrated substantial efficacy in reducing solid tumors in both preclinical and clinical studies, representing a landmark advance in cancer immunotherapy. This innovation has led to multiple national and international patents, as well as registered trademarks. Prof. Fávaro has an extensive scientific output, with publications in peer-reviewed journals with high editorial selectivity and authorship of book chapters in strategic fields such as nanomedicine, oncology, and immunology. In the area of education and knowledge dissemination, he founded the Anatomia Unicamp YouTube channel, which has become a widely used educational resource for students and healthcare professionals. His scientific, technological, and academic contributions have been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the Diploma of Merit in Health (2023), the SBOC Science Award (2021), the UNICAMP Inventors Award (2020), the Newton Prado Medal (2018), the Prof. Nelson Rodrigues Netto Jr. Award in Urology (2018), the INOVA UNICAMP Award (2018), and the IV Octavio Frias de Oliveira Award (2013). At the international level, he has coordinated major collaborative research initiatives, including the BrazilSlovenia International Cooperation Project in Research and Development, funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, and served as an official representative of the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology in the European NANoREG consortium, focused on the regulation and safety assessment of nanomaterials. Recognized for his scientific leadership, Prof. Fávaro is ranked among the Top 10,000 most influential researchers in Brazil and Latin America, according to the Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index 20242026, consolidating his role as a reference in translational research, health innovation, and advanced training of human resources.

Research activities

His present research interests are uropathology, carcinogenesis, urogenital tumors, immunotherapy, regenerative medicine and nanobiotechnology in oncology. Responsible for the development of the OncoTherad immunomodulator, which has therapeutic application in several tumors.
