Personal presentation

Dr. Wagner José Fávaro is a Professor of Human Anatomy at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and a specialist in Uropathology, Urogenital Carcinogenesis, Nanomedicine, and Drug Development. He earned his Habilitation (Associate Professor) in Anatomy of the Urogenital System from UNICAMP in 2022, and his academic journey includes a Master's degree, Ph.D., and Postdoctoral studies, all completed at UNICAMP. Dr. Fávaro is an esteemed international member of key scientific societies, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the Society for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer (SITC). He also holds the title of Full Member at the Brazilian Society of Nanomedicine. Notably, he served on the Quadrennial Evaluation Committee for the field of Medicine III at CAPES from 2017 to 2020. In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Fávaro is a co-founder of NANOIMMUNOTHERAPY PHARMA LTDA, a company committed to developing pharmaceuticals for both human and veterinary use. His leadership extends to the research realm, where he heads the group focused on "Applied Nanomedicine in Immuno-Oncology and Inflammatory Diseases" under CNPq. Dr. Fávaro is also recognized for his contributions to scientific literature, with numerous publications in prestigious national and international journals and the authorship of several book chapters. His intellectual property portfolio includes patents both in Brazil and internationally, with a particular emphasis on the development of the OncoTherad immunotherapy. Dr. Fávaro ranks among the Top 10,000 influential researchers in Latin America according to the Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index for 2023-2024. His dedication to advancing science has earned him several prestigious awards, including the Health Merit Diploma (2023)/ Paulínia-São Paulo, the SBOC Science Award (2021), the UNICAMP Inventors Award 2020 in categories related to Licensed Technology and Spin-Off Creation, the "Newton Prado" Medal (2018) for outstanding community service, the Prof. Nelson Rodrigues Netto Jr. Urology Award (2018), the INOVA UNICAMP Innovation Award (2018), and the IV Octavio Frias de Oliveira Award in the Technological Innovation in Oncology category (2013), among numerous other recognitions from scientific events. With over 15 years of research experience in urogenital carcinogenesis and nanotechnology, Dr. Fávaro achieved a remarkable milestone by developing the first 100 Brazilian immunotherapy within a public university. Named OncoTherad (MRB-CFI-1), this immunotherapy has demonstrated substantial potential in reducing various types of solid tumors. Driven by his groundbreaking work, Dr. Wagner José Fávaro established the Center for Immunotherapy and Inflammatory Diseases (CIDI) at UNICAMP, where he serves as the general coordinator. His influence extends internationally, having led the International Cooperation Project in Research and Development in collaboration with Slovenia, funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Communications (MCTIC) in 2014. Furthermore, Dr. Fávaro represented the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCTI) as a key figure in the Brazil-European Community Consortium known as NANoREG, contributing to the establishment of evaluation protocols for nanomaterials.

Research activities

His present research interests are uropathology, carcinogenesis, urogenital tumors, immunotherapy, regenerative medicine and nanobiotechnology in oncology. Responsible for the development of the OncoTherad immunomodulator, which has therapeutic application in several tumors.
